2008 - Meeting The Prime Minister
In 2008 Sacha Kaluri was fortunately requested to a breakfast meeting with Prime Minster Mr Kevin Rudd and Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard to discuss the issues of young people in Australia.
Instead of the meeting being formal and official, it was a fun and relaxing meeting with lots of laughs. Sacha, Kevin and Julia bonded immediately. Over two hours of coffee and muffins they chatted about many things from, the issues the Prime Minister has with reading his son's abbreviated language on text messages, multiculturalism, how hard his job is and also the fact that Sacha was just married and also expecting a baby.
Mr Rudd was very interested in hearing all the wedding and baby details. So much so he offered a piece of advice to keep the marriage happy and strong. After a lengthy discussion, Mr Rudd decided he would call Sacha's husband Rafael Kaluri to tell him his own marriage advice.
"In order for Rafael to be a successful man he needs to understand that behind every successful man, is a strong and supporting woman that is always the boss".
Kevin Rudd holds a majority of his success to the support he gets from his wife and also from his right hand woman Julia Gillard.
Unfortunately Rafael did not answer his phone as he was away from his desk as the time of the Prime Minister's call. Mr Rudd left a message on Rafael's phone including his personal mobile phone number for Rafael to call him back. You can only imagine how shocked Rafael was to receive a message from the Prime Minister of Australia on his mobile phone. Especially with the unique advice! Rafael text messages the Prime Minister not long after the call. During the day Rafael and Kevin text each other back and forth, with the last message being "Rafael, you have a lovely wife. Make sure you take care of her. Cheers Kevin".

April 2007 - Sacha works with Essendon Football Club and Victoria Police running motivational programs.
On the 5th of April 2007, Sacha and two police officers (Peter Sherer and Jayne Gulimartin) took a group of young people to Essendon Football club for a tour. They got to meet Kevin Sheedy (The Senior Coach) and Courtney Johns (Essendon Football Player). Johns was great, he showed them around the Hall Of Fame and then did a motivational talk to the at risk young people about making positive choices and not giving up when life gets you down.
Front Burner
Sacha Colbourne has a new creation that she has been working on. She has brought Jamie Olivers idea of the restaurant FIFTEEN to Broadmeadows. She is now running and coordinating another new program with Workforce Plus, Kangan Batman TAFE and Victoria Police.
Front Burner is a program designed for "At Risk" young people that are not engaged in school or any other education, but have an interest in hospitality. Over 10 weeks, young people have the chance to learn all the skills that they would need to work in a cafe. They learn how to make designer gourmet sandwiches, wraps and how to make 'the perfect' cup of coffee. Front Burner is about giving young people who don't have a chance at life the skills to put them in front. Instead of them putting things on the 'Back Burner', they will be on the 'Front Burner' of LIFE.
Sacha believes in giving young people encouragement, giving them skills and having them do fun things they enjoy.
Sacha says. "These young people often have failed in so many areas. Over 10 weeks we give them the chance to shine and show off their successes. They love it and it makes them feel good about them selves'. When you feel good about your self you can achieve so much more!"
Poll Position
Sacha now coordinates a program called Poll Position through Workforce Plus and Kangan Batman TAFE in Broadmeadows. This is an automotive program designed to engage "At Risk" young people between 15-17 years old from the Broadmeadows area to get back into school.
Sacha says "These "At Risk" young people can have literacy issues, may be young offenders, early school leavers, disengage from school, have behavioural issues, family issues and even homelessness. We have to support them and give them back the chance they deserve"
We want to keep young people engaged in a school of some sort- education is the key to getting them out of the negative cycle they might be in! It may be doing VCE, VCAL- in school or TAFE, A Vet Course or any other course TAFE may offer that suits them.
This is a 10 week course for one day a week. There are 10 participants, 2 teachers and Sacha as the coordinator. The group is split up into two groups- one group works on a Holden V8 engine and the other on a Ford V8 engine. Over the 10 week period they pull apart the engine and put it back together. All this time they learn all about tools, safety in the workshop and all about the engines.
Sacha recognised that these young people also need life skills as well as automotive skills, so she has networked with a whole group of other organisations to give more to the participants. Sacha has proudly got the Victorian Police on board. The Police come in and talk to them about road rules, how to modify a car safely, drink driving and a million more things that these kids ask. For the first time ever these young people get to build a positive relationship with the police. The police actually make friends with these young people as well as teaching them all about how to grow up and be good law abiding citizens.
Consumer affairs has also joined in to teach these young people all about buying a car and what to look for when signing a contract.
Moreland Hall comes out to talk to the young people about the effects of alcohol, cannabis and other drugs while driving.
During this course Sacha organises three excursions.
- The "Police Drags Right Night" out at Calder Park Raceway.
- A "High Ropes Team Building Day" with the Victorian Police out at Lady Northcote in Bacchus Marsh. Sacha and the Police work as a team to teach the young people how to make positive choices in life.
- Their graduation is also a packed in day, firstly they begin with a tour of Venture - This is a company that makes all the plastic components of a car, eg. the dash board and bumper bars. Then they are off to the Holden Foundry where they get to do a tour of the way a Holden engine is made.
Thanks Workforce Plus for giving me this opportunity!! Says Miss Colbourne.
A new program Sacha is starting in term 4, 2006 is called "Front Burner". It will have the same concept as Poll Position, but will be a hospitality version. It will give them skills to work in a cafe a how to make a sensational cup of coffee.
Keep an eye out for updates.
